There is no thread for it yet, and I want to say how much I love this song. A lot of songs seem to have both big fans and detractors, while Wave seems to be one of the few that are in the middle a bit. Maybe that's why it hasn't been mentioned as often so far, because it's so unassuming. It's pretty calm and elegant, with a beautiful restrained chorus that swells.
Anthony is fantastic on this song. To me it's a good example of how he brings a little extra, that gives it that lift in feeling, like 0:40 for example, just that first line (and then it expands a little with the aahs). In past albums I can't imagine a little melodic shift like that. It's very seamless, pretty subtle, but it lifts the atmosphere.
There is also quite a bit of varation in rhythm during the verse while the instrumental part stays the same, and then right before the chorus another small shift. It's a pretty intricate song, and I believe it will surface more as time goes on and the initial shock of Goodbye solos and spanking choruses settles a bit. There are also a few good really honest and genuine lyric bits that suit the atmosphere of the song perfectly, and suit the metre perfectly.
To me it sounds like a very timeless song, or a classic old song without being capable of pinpointing the era it's from. I mostly get that feeling from the chorus, it feels very universal. It vaguely reminds me of those piano'ish guys in the first half of the 70s with the big classic melodies, but that's not all there is to it. The melodies, especially the chorus, definitely aren't standard Chili Peppers, but I can still imagine being 85 years old, listening to this, and thinking of it as an obvious essential classic. It's a classic without trying too hard to be one and it's not at all caught up in the sound of this, or any, generation of music so it can stand the test of time.
