The most surprising track was definitely "This Ticonderoga". Didn't except that at all and "Go Robot" is the high moment of the album for me.

I am really enjoying This Ticonderoga actually, I prefer it over it over Detroit at the moment. The change in pace is just so interesting but it fits so well. The raw kinda screaming "Done it Right" AK gives when he's says it like 4 or 5 times at the end is awesome. It would be a very fun song to have live, I'm interested to see on Friday night how it turned out at the iHeart Radio Performance.
3 hours till release down here. Hoping Warner send the digital download asap and we don't have to wait for it.....

For those waiting to buy it on iTunes, heres a little tip if you want it right now - change your region to New Zealand at the bottom of the page and when you go to The Getaway it is available to buy! Same thing people did for IWY from memory

Yeah will be really interesting to hear it live. Now that I have listened the album few times, I have to say that I don't find any weak songs. Btw I went for the vinyl

So far what hits me most is that this feels so much like an album, it's very together, every song has a purpose and there's no filler on there. Sometimes I get an urge to listen to the album instead of a song, it has its own feeling to it. Something with an atmosphere this strong is bound to go sit very deep over the years for me.
But there are still individual tracks I play more of course, so far We Turn Red, Detroit, Ticon, Encore and Dreams of a Samurai are my favorites. The Longest Wave is growing on me fast, sounds like some classic from a long but indefinable time ago. Feasting on the Flowers and The Hunter surprised me in similar ways, my head was trying to place it in an understandable Chili spot but it failed, so that's really exciting to see where it ends up as a song (instead of oh wow new sound) with new connotations connected to it.
Sick Love and Go Robot were the weakest for me so far (and the only two close-to-great-but-not-great), but Go Robot is growing on me fast after hearing that live in France version tonight. And also woke up with the chorus stuck in my head, so there's that. I just think the poppier/more fun having songs will take a longer time, you can't force having fun like that. Samurai just throws you on the floor after one listen, but songs like Robot are more about just having a good time in the moment, and I'm sure after there have been a ton of those moments after Summer is over and it was the song of the Summer everywhere, it'll be right up there.
And the brilliant discovery of double bass, the two (?) times it's used it takes the song to intense heights. There's a ton more here, but I'm off to listen more first and let it sink in.

Didn't receive a digital download despite pre-ordering right after DN came out, nor have i received any info on my order. Pretty disappointing. Had a lot of driving to do today, so forced me to pick up another copy today despite ordering a CD with my vinyl & cassette and also had to buy it earlier on iTunes seeing no digital download.
Don't mind spending the extra cash, as its the Chilis and for my pleasure, it's just I was expecting all my shit today and a digital download at midnight or just after. Wonder if other Aussies who have ordered through the Warner Aus Store have experienced the same thing... was a little annoyed but got over it once i started blasting it in the car lol
Either way, now I've had a massive day of listening to this consistently in its true quality rather than a leak, I feel comfortable commenting more on it properly. I'll do that later on tonight as I have to do a few things now. Will be more positivity and love incoming from me

I've been sitting on my hands the past few days, as I didn't want to listen to the leak, so I've been waiting for today to listen to the full album. Here are some thoughts based on first listen (left out the first 3 songs, as I feel we've discussed them already). SPOILER: The following content is filled with personal opinions. Feel free to discuss them with me (but if you disagree, you're, like, totally wrong man) The Longest Wave- The intro and outro seems very BTW-esque
- Doesn't at all sound like the RHCP I'm used to, it's a clear new direction
Goodbye Angels- Weak vocals, especially in the start
- In general good lyrics, but I can't stand the "Ayo ayo ayo" part
- Nice buildup throughout the song
- Great solo, but I don't think it fits the rest of the track
Sick Love- Intro has a heavy Hendrix-vibe
- In general this reminds me a bit of Warm Tape
- Josh does well on the backing vocals in the chorus
Go Robot- Finally we get some funk
- I like how Anthony sounds like "the old AK" on the verses, got a good flow
- I'm not sure I can get behind the disco part, but I think it's a grower
Feasting on the Flowers- Josh comes to his right in this track
- I like the "The next dimension, show me in" part, for the first time since on We Turn Red, I feel that they break through "the barrier", and really hit the listener. I've been missing that on the past few songs
- Great bridge
Detroit- Finally a song with great energy througout, should become a live favorite
- I really think the vocals in the chorus are weak, but this could be changed live, and make it a real stand-out track
This Ticonderoga- The verses on this gives me almost a MM-feel
- Another song with great live potential, good energy
- The breakdowns work great
Encore- After finding out this was based on their encore jam, I expected really big things from Josh on this - and he delivered!
- Greatest atmosphere so far on the album, doesn't "break through" in the way We Turn Red, Dark Necessities and This Ticonderoga does, but instead keeps you under a spell throughout the song
- I wish this had ended off with a great Josh-solo, that would've made it almost Wet Sand-tier great imo
The Hunter- This sounds nothing like anything the band has really done before, but I like the idea of a sadder ballad
- The new dimension the band gets, from having a piano in there, really shines through on this track
- Great tension throughout
Dreams of a Samurai- Chad really comes to his right on this track again
- Amazing instrumentation in general
- Great vocal delivery from AK, his best song along with the title track
- I like the fade out in the end
- This would work great for encores on live shows (along with Encore, perhaps? )
General things- TOO MUCH DAMN CLAPPING
- Songs from The Longest Wave through Go Robot really lack energy, but from This Ticonderoga through Dreams of a Samurai I really enjoy every track on first listen
- Could do with a bit more soloing, especially from Josh - especially Encore could’ve done with a solo, and a “sad” sort of guitar solo at the end of The Hunter would’ve worked brilliantly imo
Best Anthony performance: The Getaway Best Josh performance: Encore or Dreams of a Samurai Best Chad performance: We Turn Red or Dreams of a Samurai Best Flea performance: Dark Necessities Power rankings Amazing songs
1. Dreams of a Samurai 2. Encore Great songs
3. The Hunter 4. This Ticonderoga 5. The Getaway 6. Dark Necessities Good songs
7. We Turn Red 8. Feasting on the Flowers 9. Detroit 10. Go Robot 11. Sick Love Mediocre songs
12. The Longest Wave 13. Goodbye Angels Now feel free to go and decapitate me

Also, completely forgot.
Best Elton John Performance: Sick Love by far. It's like he wasn't even there on the other tracks, but Sick Love is his stand out track.

On second listen Dreams of a Samurai is even better than I first thought. There are so many amazing subtleties, like the piano coming in again for the second (I think) verse, the "oooh"'s from the background choir, Josh's guitar lick, it's all just amazing. Definitely my favorite so far.

When the first three songs were released one by one, I was blown away by how just right and complete they felt. By now there's no doubt the rest of the album is the same, for me everything is in the right place.
The track listing just works so well. It builds up beautifully to Detroit and This Ticonderoga and then there's this strong ending with the last three songs. Dreams of a Samurai is just another level.
The Getaway sounds so perfectly melodic and very tight and groovy at the same time. Dark Necessities is basically a huge classic in my head by now, I hold my breath every time that intro starts. It must be the feeling of seeing this band back and enjoying it more than ever.
We Turn Red is just goddamn roaring perfection.
Every song is so well crafted and intricate but not to the point when it's a mess or seems pointless (even the one I personally don't care for). And it seems like an album that keeps opening up in different ways the more you listen, which I enjoy a lot.
I realize it might not be the album that works for everybody, but I'm very happy with it. It's clearly a step up for the band, they still sound like the Chili Peppers but there's no repetition or imitation, at least I don't see it. Even when they do heavier songs like Detroit, it's not pretending to be 20 years old again.
At this point I don't really feel like dissecting each song and trying to find which little thing makes it work, because it just does and it's so good to be lost inside of it.

Thats what I think too, a figure of his stature in the world of music to be featured prominently on a Chili Peppers track would have been massive. Most people, apart from us as fans, won't even know he's played piano on the song unless they look at the back of the booklet. Its like a hidden easter egg. Was definitely expecting more.

Quixotic dude... you voted the best song on the album LAST? Sorry about that Ozzy, but I just finished listening to the album through proper speakers for the first time, and you'll be pleased to know that I've changed my mind. I'd think my reconsidered list goes like this. 1. Dreams of a Samurai 2. Encore 3. The Hunter 4. The Getaway 5. We Turn Red 6. This Ticonderoga 7. Dark Necessities 8. Goodbye Angels 9. Go Robot 10. Feasting on the Flowers 11. The Longest Wave 12. Detroit 13. Sick Love The only tracks so far that I can't really get behind are the bottom 2. I finally understand the love for Goodbye Angels, and it's definitely a grower for me - but nowhere near the top 3, which are all amazing tracks imo. Even The Longest Wave grew on my, which I really wasn't expecting it to.

And on that list above, the songs from rank 4 to 11 could really be anywhere in between, depending on my mood.

The beauty of this album and how well rounded it is. Has anyone noticed in the booklet that Mauro has been accredited in Go Robot and Sick Love (I think from memory)...? Just found that interesting that he still went in to help out for a couple of tracks

The first time I listened to the album, I was getting ready for work and not paying too much attention...so I wasn't bowled over by it.
I came home, whacked the sound up and popped it on again. My word, it was fucking amazing.

I think it'll go up in time as I haven't listened to it much. I hope its a grower because I'd love to love it. I do appreciate the song though!

I do understand you. I find The Hunter to be the least "classic" Peppers song, and it's a style they haven't truly explored in any other songs, at least not that I can think of. So in that way, it's much down to personal taste (duh), whether you like it or not.

In relation to those posts above, it's interesting to see that the opinions about this album are extremely diverse (a good thing), but it made me notice that there's often coherent modes of thinking. If you rank Hunter low, Feasting is also often low. A lot of people love Sick Love, and then usually Go Robot too. If you like Go Robot, you usually like Goodbye Angels. The people that love Samurai will often think Sick Love is one of the weakest. And so on, it's peculiar to see.
Usually there a few Wet Sand type of universally agreed upon standouts, and there are a few general standouts here too, but what's special is that they just as easily get rated as some of the weakest by others. The whole album is so weirdly democratic and different for everybody.
edit; and to break the mold The Longest Wave is just always caught in the middle being generally averagely liked, or at least not offensive, to everybody hehe.

The lyrics from The Hunter touched my soul from the first time, especially the chorus and the second verse. It sounds like a blues song. I wanted on the verses to hear some Josh solos, I think that then will be the perfect song.
The lyrics are for Anthony's father, right?

Yep, pretty sure its about his dad! Pretty good job Josh did with the bass on this track too. Beautiful, meaningful song thats everything a Peppers song normally isn't. A lot of people still trying to come to terms with this track it seems
